How to Childproof Your Kitchen Cabinets

The kitchen is more than just an area where you store, prepare and cook food. It is now a gathering hotspot, much like your living room. However, if you have kids crawling or rolling around, it can quickly become a danger zone. Lower cabinets, for instance, can be scary, but for your little ones, these are gateways to anything that will pique their curiosity.

In this blog, the kitchen remodeling designers at The Kitchen Store share some helpful tips to keep in mind when childproofing your cabinets.

Remove Dangerous Objects

Your kid will be curious as to what’s behind your cabinet doors. If you’re worried about leaving them open while he or she is in the kitchen, consider storing items that are harmless and non-fragile like plastic bowls, plates, and other utensils. If you have items in there that are toxic, heavy, made of glass, or have sharp edges, relocate them to any storage area that is out of your child’s reach.

Use Pull Cord Locks

These additions are good for both contemporary and traditional cabinet designs, especially those equipped with round knobs placed side-by-side. Just place them around both knobs then press and slide all the way up to secure the cabinet doors. The great thing about these locking mechanisms is that they can’t be undone. No matter how hard your child tries to pry them off, they won’t come loose. Be sure your pull cord locks work properly and don’t leave long strands, which can pose a likely choking hazard.

Conceal Cabinet Knobs

Your child’s head could bump on one of the large cabinet doorknobs. Cover them up with something soft, like old tennis balls split on one end, crocheted covers or soft fabrics. They may detract from the overall aesthetic of your kitchen, but you can prevent bruises on your kid’s forehead with this simple hack.
