7 Ways to Prevent Countertop Damage

Countertops are one of the most used surfaces in your home. Even if they are made from durable materials, they can still experience damage.

Here are ways to prevent countertop damage from traditional kitchen design experts.

Use Gentle Cleaners

Abrasive cleaning solutions with bleach and ammonia can remove the luster of stone and granite countertops. Prevent the surface from fading by using mild soap and warm water for daily cleaning.

Avoid Placing Hot Appliances or Pans

Make sure to check the manufacturer’s recommendations before placing hot kitchen appliances or pans on your countertop. Temperature changes can cause cracking in certain materials. To be safe, place a trivet or cutting board between the appliance and the counter.

Always Use a Chopping Board

Kitchen remodeling designers don’t recommend chopping or slicing directly on the countertop. Even the smallest scratches can harm the surface’s waterproof sealant, making it prone to damage.

Keep the Surface Dry

Water can stain your kitchen counter. Wipe spills immediately and dry the surface with a towel to prevent stains.

Never Lean on the Edges

Splitting or peeling edges are typical issues with laminate countertops. To reduce stress on the surface, don’t lean on it. Also, you shouldn’t use the counters to open soda or beer bottles.

Use Shades

Direct sunlight can cause laminate countertops to fade. It can also fade some sealants on granite and wood counters. Be sure to minimize long-term damage by pulling down a shade when the sun is at its peak.

Work on Different Areas

Repetitive motions in the same spot of your counter can result in scratches and other signs of wear. Try using other parts of the counter if you have space.
