The kitchen one of the busiest parts of the house, with all the meal preparation, cooking, and even dining. We understand how annoying it can be to wash the chopping board every time you cook, especially when you do it multiple times a day.
In this blog post, a trusted cabinet expert shares whether you can cut food directly on a countertop or not.
If you have quartz and granite countertops, then yes, you can cut food directly on them. Quartz is very durable and one of the hardest materials available on the market. It withstands cuts and scratches from slicing. This engineered stone is made from small pieces of stone mixed with a resin and compressed. However, not because you can doesn’t mean you should.
Quartz can still sustain damage when enough force is applied to it. Cutting directly on your countertops can also damage your knives. Constantly chopping food on hard surfaces can make your knives lose their sharp edge. While this material is scratch and slice resistant, it’s not damage-proof.
Stones like marble and limestone can get scratches easily and are more prone to damage from acidic foods and beverages. However, it doesn’t mean that you should exclude marble in your custom kitchen remodeling project. In fact, marble counters are loved by bakers and chefs. The coolness of their surface prevents buttery dough from being to warm. These counters are also great for tempering chocolate.
When slicing raw meat, it’s best to use a cutting board. The meat won’t damage the countertop but the bacteria on it can seep into the small gaps on the stone’s surface. These microorganisms will multiply and get into other food items, which can risk your family’s health. You can use cleaners and disinfectants but keep in mind that certain chemicals can damage the countertop seal, making the surface prone to staining.
