Key Considerations When Planning a Kitchen Remodel

Remodeling a kitchen is an exciting project. However, don’t let enthusiasm get in the way of a proper plan, because it can help keep your project on track and within budget. Read on as The Kitchen Store takes a look at important considerations to keep in mind when planning your kitchen remodel.

The Budget

Your remodeling budget will inform your decisions in nearly all aspects of the project, so your budget should be planned for first. While saving up and paying in cash is the ideal way to finance your project, it is not your only option. Other options like credit cards, loans like HEL (home equity loans), HELOC (home equity line of credit), and cash-out refinancing are available. Your budget should also include an overhead worth about 10% to 20% of the project cost, for “emergencies” involving unplanned repairs.

The Basics

Before you think about colors and other aesthetic aspects of your kitchen, make sure that you have the basics covered. Take the floor plan, for instance: if moving around your existing kitchen is not as convenient, then you should rethink the work area placement in your new floor plan. If your kitchen seems cluttered or if you feel that you need more storage, then the cabinetry will need to be redesigned to accommodate your needs. If you’re finding it difficult to prep your meals because of insufficient lighting, then an improved lighting plan has to be on your checklist.

Once you have all the basics covered, you and your kitchen designer can round up the remodeling plan by adding features like countertop materials, cabinet doors and appliances, as well as the kitchen color palette and hardware selection.

The Schedule

The project timeline depends on several factors, such as the project’s complexity and the remodeler’s availability. This is why planning way ahead is important: it will help you make sure that milestones are met and the project completed on time. Working with an experienced kitchen remodeler can also help make it easier to handle delays without sacrificing quality.
