Making Your Kitchen More Accessible

When designing your house, it’s important to make your kitchen accessible. Since it’s used by many people, the kitchen is one of the integral parts of your home. Whether it’s food preparation or tidying up, it should provide a great experience for everybody. These days, there are many products and modifications you can add to your kitchen to make it more convenient.

With the help of professionals, upgrading your kitchen could be an exciting project. Kitchen remodeling expert The Kitchen Store provides some helpful suggestions on how to make your kitchen more accessible.

Easy to Reach

The main goal of an accessible kitchen is that everybody should be able to use it easily. For people in seated positions, it may be difficult to reach high cabinets. One way you can ease this height problem is by lowering countertops and wall cabinets. For countertops, it’s recommended to lower it by two inches for seated people. Since this might be a problem for tall people, some households choose varying countertop heights to address each need. If you have a bigger budget, you might consider adjustable cabinets that go up and down the wall for easier access.

Maximize Storage Space

While a kitchen cabinet could improve the looks of your cabinet, you should also make sure that everyone can use them. Some hard-to-reach cabinets and drawers could be a problem for somebody in a wheelchair. For better storage space, roll-out cabinets or pull-out pantries are great additions. Roll-out cabinet drawers are perfect for pots and pans for easier access. On the other hand, you can use pull-out pantries for boxed and canned goods to keep them organized. It’s also a good idea for your shelves to be designed narrowly in width so you can fill up your cabinet more efficiently.

Suitable Appliances

For more convenient prepping and washing up, appliances in your kitchen should be accessible for everybody. For instance, it’s encouraged that cooktops are separated from the oven to provide more leg space and easier use. Wall ovens should also be considered because they can be placed depending on your height. For wheelchair users, a side-hinged model is a good idea. Refrigerators with bottom, pull-out drawer freezers are easy to use, but side-by-side models are also convenient. Meanwhile, dishwashers could be customized from standard installation height for seated people. Racks must also move seamlessly with little pressure.
