Things to Keep in Mind When Choosing a Kitchen Backsplash

A backsplash is an extension of the kitchen countertop. It serves an aesthetic purpose and protects the wall behind the sink from splashes, spills, and other water-related damage. When choosing the appropriate backsplash for your kitchen, there are several things that you need to be aware of. A kitchen cabinet expert shares some of them below.

  • Size up space. To determine how much material, whether ceramic, stone, or stone, you will need for your kitchen backsplash, simply multiply the width by the height of the wall. Account for an extra 10 percent of tile to be on the safe side.
  • Think about the focal points. The kitchen should have two focal points or areas where the eye is naturally drawn to — the space above the range and above the sink. Feel free to experiment and let a kitchen remodeling expert incorporate elaborate designs into these areas.
  • Consider a larger space. To achieve a contemporary look, stretch the backsplash tiling to wrap around the kitchen space. While it will increase the upfront cost, it is a neat visual trick to expand the square footage of a small kitchen.
  • Seal accordingly. Keep in mind that different tile materials have different sealing requirements. For example, natural tile like granite, slate, and marble should be resealed at least once a year for better performance, while travertine can get away with resealing every two years.
  • Invest in good-quality grout. When budgeting for the remodel, make allowances for the color and pattern as these trends often come and go. Grout is the backbone of your backsplash, so make sure to use it correctly.
