U-Shaped Kitchens: Efficiency at Its Best

Of all the kitchen designs out there, the U-shaped kitchen design remains the most popular and practical. It’s simple, straightforward and respects the work triangle of the kitchen space. The fact that it works well with both large and smaller kitchens is something noteworthy.

The Kitchen Store, your local kitchen remodeling designers, shares why the U-Shaped kitchen design is efficiency at its best.

A Spacious Work Area

The biggest draw to the u-shaped kitchen design is how spacious the work triangle is. The design is basically one wide galley kitchen with one closed off to the wall and the main work areas – the sink, fridge and stove, at the very edges of the U shape.

This traditional kitchen design only has one space-related setback: it can’t actually fit in a dining area within the U space. This isn’t a problem for larger kitchens where there is usually a separate area for dining. For smaller floor plans, you can instead create a pass-through dining area where the seating area is on the legs of the U. This gives you easy access to the main kitchen areas while not reducing the space in the work area.

A Versatile Design

The U-shaped kitchen layout is versatile as you don’t necessarily have to put the entire U-shape wall-to-wall. The other edge of the U can take the form of a center island or breakfast station. This involves shrinking down the workspace so that the outer edge wraps inside the room. That said, the naturally wide space of this design layout means there’s not too much loss in space.

Minimalist Design

While commonly used in more traditional kitchens, the u-shaped design is popular in more modern kitchens due to how naturally efficient the floor plan is. Since the U shape opens up to the next area, movement is free-flowing and easy compared to traditional kitchens that often force you to navigate center islands and separate cabinets.

This design also offers a lot of vertical space for the cabinets and other add-ons. This makes it more spacious in a sense so long as you take advantage of verticality.

At The Kitchen Store, we can help you install traditional cabinet designs and brainstorm a more effective kitchen layout for your home. Call us today at (310) 736-1077 to learn more about our services. We are kitchen remodeling designers in Culver City, CA.
