Which Countertop Materials Are the Most Heat-Resistant?

Homeowners put a lot of thought into their countertop remodeling projects, particularly in choosing the right materials for the job. When it comes to countertops, different products are judged on a few factors such as color and style, durability, cost and, of course, resistance to common causes of problems like impact, scratches and heat.

While every type of countertop material has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, some are better than others when it comes to withstanding cooking temperatures. Let our kitchen design experts at The Kitchen Store walk you through some of the most heat-resistant countertops available today.

Natural Stone Countertops

Natural stones like granite form under high heat and high-pressure conditions deep in the earth so it comes to no surprise that they are, by far, the most heat-resistant material to use for a countertop. It’s also the reason why many kitchen remodeling services recommend their use, especially in homes with extremely busy kitchens. Other natural stone materials like quartz and marble are not quite as strong as granite, so you’ll need heat pads when placing hot pots and pans on their surface.

Metal

Metals like aluminum, copper and stainless steel are more commonly used in commercial kitchens but more and more homeowners are seeing their merits. Metals have a high heat capacity and resistance, although they can stain rather quickly. These stains are easily removed, however, because metals are also one of the easiest materials to clean.

Laminates and Engineered Stone

No decent kitchen remodeling expert will claim that laminates and other synthetic countertops have high resistance to heat. In fact, even resting a hot cup of coffee is enough to cause cracking or discoloration on its finish. Engineered stone, on the other hand, can vary in heat resistance depending on the manufacturer.
