Solid-Surface Countertops vs. Quartz: Which is Better?

If you are in the market for a new countertop for your kitchen or bathroom remodel, you may find yourself torn between two of the most popular materials available in the market today: solid-surface countertops and quartz. Both are mid-range options that are quite similar to each other, delivering the same durable, easy-to-maintain, and heat-resistant qualities that most homeowners expect from a quality countertop.

While they may appear similar, there are actually quite a few differences. In today’s post, kitchen remodeling experts The Kitchen Store explains some of these differences so that you, as a homeowner, can make the most informed decision when it comes to selecting the right material.

Solid-Surface Countertops

Solid-surface countertops are made from mineral dust mixed with a variety of resins and pigments. This material was first introduced by DuPont in 1967 as an alternative to natural stone countertops. Its main appeal is that it mimics the look of natural stone but is virtually non-porous making it more resistant to cracks and chipping while also keeping bacteria away.

Solid-surface countertops are a favorite among kitchen remodeling designers since they come in a wider variety of colors and patterns so you can achieve a more customized look in your bathroom or kitchen.

Quartz Countertops

Quartz countertops are also a man-made material that contains roughly around 90% natural quartz stone. Upon closer inspection, quartz resembles natural stone countertops such as granite and marble more closely so if you are aiming for that look but are looking to spend less, then quartz is the way to go.

Quartz countertops are very hard and are more unlikely to scratch or chip compared to solid-surface countertops. They also have a higher heat resistance so you can set a smoking-hot skillet on top of it without issue.
