5 Popular Kitchen Cabinet Door Styles

Kitchen cabinets are one of the most prominent design components in any kitchen. Unlike other types of furniture, you can simply have the kitchen doors replaced or refaced to give it a completely new look. Kitchen remodeling expert The Kitchen Store shares the most popular kitchen cabinet styles that you should consider.

  1. Shaker — The Shaker style originated from 18th-century English migrants known as the Shakers, who, as craftspeople, brought a handcrafted aesthetic with their designs. Shaker-style cabinets feature a minimalist, handcrafted quality that works with most home styles and color palettes.

  1. Louvered — One tends to think of shutters when talking about louvered panels, but as kitchen cabinet doors, they actually look great. Louvered cabinet doors are ideal for kitchen cabinets that require ventilation, such as those that contain wifi extenders or other electronics.

  1. Flat — Flat cabinet doors are simple and understated yet work with contemporary style kitchens. Choose minimalist hardware, such as “hidden” handles, to perpetuate the flat look. Note that white or light-colored cabinets will make stains and blemishes more visible and will require additional care.

  1. Inset — Most kitchen cabinet door styles are installed on the cabinet enclosure. Inset cabinet doors, on the other hand, are set inside the cabinet frame. This requires a precision build as the door should be easy to open and close despite wood expansion and contraction. Note that inset doors will reduce the cabinet storage space as the doors and hardware occupy the cabinet interior.

  1. Distressed — If you love the vintage look but don’t want the vintage condition, choose kitchen cabinets with a distressed look. The cabinet doors are artificially aged by sanding or using painting techniques such as craquelure, which creates cracks on the paint layer. A final protective layer preserves the cabinet door and protects it from damage caused by moisture intrusion. The custom aging process increases cost but can be worth it if with a good craftsman.
