One of the things kitchen remodeling designers will ask you is what kind of countertops you’re interested in. Given countertops have a role in both the form and function of your kitchen, it’s worth making sure you are getting the right one for your home, starting with understanding options available to you. The Kitchen Store lends a hand by discussing cultured and natural marble below:
Cultured Marble
A man-made product, cultured marble is made by combining crushed marble dust and polyester resins. It is coated with a gel layer afterward, resulting in a glossy finish with subtle but uniform veins and color. To achieve a countertop design, cultured marble is placed inside heated molds.
Non-porous, cultured marble doesn’t require sealing. It can be cleaned with any non-abrasive cleanser and then left to dry. If it gets scratched, it can be repolished. This ease of maintenance puts the material in good favor with homeowners interested in traditional kitchen design.
Natural Marble
Marbe is a high-end product, making it a premium choice for countertops. Depending on its source, it can boast of spectacular veining and brilliant colors that can be one-of-a-kind. As it is natural stone, marble is porous. This means it should be sealed well to prevent stains due to water absorption. To properly clean marble countertops, stone cleansers have to be used and they have to be squeegeed dry after each use to prevent etching and staining. Re-sealing should also be done every six months to a year.
